My anecdote of perceiving something differently than someone else is quite similar to that of Mrs. Colborne. I am an enormous fan of the band Steely Dan. I find their music to be refreshingly complex and insightful. I was thrilled to show one of their songs to a friend one day but to my horror he turned it off "because it was too slow". Instead we ended up listening to Devo who I think is (no hate) less than enjoyable. I was shocked. I have always thought that their music is faultless. It is pristine but edgy, clever but emotional. For me, it is everything. Can art ever be viewed subjectively or is it always a matter of personal opinion? Could there ever be a song that is universally hated or loved? Is tempo a huge factor in how humans decide what music we like? I understand that if you were going to the gym you wouldn't want a ballad or something slow but can the quality of music really be defined by how fast it is? Is there a specific tempo that humans are drawn to more than any other? I am quite a thoughtful (as in I think more than I talk), controlled person while my friend is more impulsive and impatient. The musicians in Steely Dan are notorious for perfectionism and I have also struggled with this. Do certain types of music appeal to certain personality types?
(Sorry I realize this has been steered into more of a music post than a TOK post but I think I achieved the purpose in the end)
